Sustainability and urban planning

Now, more than ever, urban planning and sustainability practices must coexist

We’re committed to growing a sustainable brand and culture within our organisation. It’s our responsibility to not only do the right things but to also set good examples. We’re still small but we plan on being around for a long time, so we want to build practices and ethics which pave the way for the better.

Method’s Do Better initiative

Our Do Better initiative gives us a forum to talk openly about both the good things we’re doing and the things we want to get better at. When we engage in these important conversations, ideas are sparked and open doorways for great change to be made.

As we’re very active within our own community and many other Perth communities, we have our ear to the ground on the wants and needs of the people within them. It’s also refreshing to see our youth adopt a genuine care for the environment and engage in local events and activities centred around ‘doing better’.

How our current initiatives promote sustainable urban planning

  • We’re committed to working on projects that achieve 5-star Green Star or One Planet recognition and to ensure our clients are well-informed about their benefits

  • Continue with staff training on the latest and best ways to implement sustainable development strategies

  • Promoting the Town Team movement and advocating for the positive influence Town Teams have on local communities

  • Ensuring that all recyclable materials are recycled correctly

  • Purchasing services and products from indigenous-owned organisations where possible

  • Utilising public transport or carpooling to meetings or site visits whenever possible

  • Working closely with schools and universities to talk about career pathways with students and young professionals for mentoring or work experience

  • We stand for diversity in our team

  • Allowing flexibility and work life balance for staff with the implementation of flexible hours

“I’ve worked with Trent on various projects spanning 17 years, from smaller commercial and residential subdivisions to large scale $80+ million-dollar luxury mixed use developments. He has assisted our company in delivering innovative solutions to suit our development models and is able to relate to different audiences to ensure effective communication from high levels of government through to local communities, ensuring maximisation of yields and project delivery in a timely manner. I highly recommend Trent for your development project.”

Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)

Method is a dedicated supporter of reconciliation and is in the Reflect stage of Reconciliation Australia’s four RAP stages.

As part of this, committing to a Reflect RAP means scoping and developing relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, deciding on our vision for reconciliation and exploring our sphere of influence.

Pro Bono Work

Method is committed to the greater good and development of the community.  Trent is currently Vice Chair of Leederville Connect, a not-for-profit organisation that works for the betterment of the Leederville Town Centre, and has been involved since 2018.

Trent has committed to spending at least one day a month on undertaking pro bono work for volunteer organisations involved in community building, including the Town Team Movement.

For more detail on this initiative, or if you want to be involved and have ideas you’d like to discuss, you can contact Trent at trent@methodplanning.com.au.
